Dr. Schwartz describes LASIK corrective eye surgery and recalls how long it takes to perform this procedure.

Dr. Schwartz:
Hi, I am Dr. Jay Schwartz. I am an ophthalmologist here in Scottsdale, Arizona. I see patients from Scottsdale, Glendale, the greater-Phoenix area. I specialize in cataract and refractive surgery.

LASIK is a type of eye surgery to correct for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism. It can also be used to help correct for patients who want to get rid of reading glasses. So, the LASIK procedure itself is done with, now a days with most modern technology using all laser technology creating a flap, lasering and reshaping the surface of the eye, and then repositioning that flap back on to the surface of the eye.

The patients, when they come to my office for a LASIK procedure, are here for approximately an hour and a half. Often times we’re retesting things that we saw on the first day just to be certain that everything is perfect before we proceed with the LASIK.

The surgery, the procedure itself lasts approximately 8 to 10 minutes. It’s actually fairly quick. A lot of the time spent here is preparatory time and then of course checking on the patients after the procedure to make sure they are doing well and they are feeling good before they leave to go home.
