This month I have been asked to talk about eyes and vision and how to treat them naturally. Our eyes are sensitive organs and we depend on them for so much it is worth taking a minute to learn how to keep them healthy.

Our eyes provide us with sight so we can interpret distance, shapes, colors and people. Our vision start as light waves of an object pass through our cornea which is located in the front dome of our eye. Light then passes through our pupil or the black circle part of the eye and once on the inside of the eye, the light waves actually turn upside down and backwards to the back of the eye.

The light waves pass through a clear liquid area of the eye called the vitreous humor, then land on the retina at the back of the eye where the optic nerve takes the light wave image and changes it to electrical impulses so it can be sent to the to the visual areas of the brain where we see the image right side up again. The visual areas of the brain are located in the occipital lobe of at the back part of the brain.

As you can see there are quite a few steps involved in the process of being able to see anything. Even though the eyes are at the top of the head they can be affected by many body systems. For example, because the eyes are such small organs, the blood vessels that lead to them are small and much more sensitive to changes in blood pressure high blood pressure. People with diabetes can lose sight in their eyes because of the instability in blood pressure.

It is important to realize that your general health can have a strong impact on eyes too. So if you are not taking care of your health now, in 5 or 10 years, you might experience eye problems, obstructed vision and lost of sight. I think it is important to understand that the health that you are experiencing today will impact your total health in the future. Sometimes we take our eye health for granted because we don’t experience pain or discomfort now, but we are fearful and devastated when it is too late.

For chronic problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney problems treating them using conventional or alternative methods will make the difference in your eye health in the future.
