Dr. Reitzel explains if there are any negative side effects or risks associated with epidural injections.

Dr. Reitzel:
There are risks like anything that you do in this world. Perhaps the biggest risk with an epidural is it doesn’t work, okay? Worst case scenario, you take that epidural out and you put another one back in – absolutely worst case scenario.

Obviously, any time you put a needle through a skin there’s a chance of infection and bleeding, but we use hats, masks, sterile gloves and we do all the appropriate things to make sure this is sterile environment.

About one out of every 250 people end up getting a headache and there’s no way to tell who gets a headache and who doesn’t, but if that were to happen the anesthesiologist as well as the obstetrician would have some conversations and explain to you what that was about and why that happened.

Now obviously people who are at higher risk, say they have some other medical problems when they are pregnant, may not always qualify for an epidural, but once you get an epidural those risks are very, very, very small.

You actually have a better chance of getting into an accident on the 202 here in Phoenix than you do having a problem doing anything in the hospital that we do for you.
