Sad Talkers

If you’re a fan of the Seinfeld TV show you are probably familiar with the “Close Talker” (who, when talking to you, gets way too close to your face and seriously violates your personal space), the “High Talker” (a man whose voice was so high-pitched that he sounded like a woman), and the “Low Talker” (who talks so softly that you can’t hear her).

These characteristics made for lots of laughs. The close talker got so close to Kramer that he tripped over backwards trying to get away and maintain his personal space, the high talker was mistaken for someone else causing some entertaining misunderstandings, and the low talker ended up getting Jerry to agree to wear a ridiculous puffy shirt on national TV, only because he was sick of saying “What??” when he couldn’t hear her.

I’ve created a character of my own: the “Sad Talker.” This is someone that seems to enjoy talking about sad things, bringing down the mood of everyone around them. Not only do they tell their own sad stories, but also the sad things in the world around us and even terrible or unfortunate things that have happened to people that they know but that you do not!

Do you know a sad talker? Do you find that listening to them is depressing? I sure do. I don’t think that these people are mean or purposely trying to depress us. But I do encourage you to keep them from bringing you down. With the stressful lives that so many of us lead, the last thing we need is more negativity to deal with.

There is no reason why you should have to listen to any kind of behavior that upsets you. Here’s how to protect yourself: first, ask them to talk about something else. It is very likely that they don’t even realize how upsetting they are.

If they ask why or object, tell them that they are upsetting you. You don’t have to justify yourself or explain any more than that. If they refuse, you have the ultimate power to avoid them completely. Don’t put up with it, you deserve better.

If you ARE a sad talker, STOP IT! I would guess that the only people who want to hear all of your depressing stories are other sad talkers. Fine, talk to them but don’t bore and bring down the rest of us.

Don’t put up with sad talkers, and don’t be one. The world will be a better place for everyone.
