Joanna Poppink shares how eating disorders are related to fear and safety.

Joanna:
Hi. I am Joanna Poppink. I am a psychotherapist in Los Angeles. I have been a psychotherapist for a long time and my specialty is treating women who have eating disorders.

A woman with an eating disorder usually doesn’t know what it means to feel safe, truly safe.

She eats or starves or binges or purges or all of the above, to feel safe, to get away from fears that she doesn’t even know she has.

This will also show up in other realms of her life. She may have a bad parking place where she parks in the dark and has a walk to a safe place.

She may walk through dark corridors alone. She may let strangers come into her house to hang a picture or to fill out a form.

She doesn’t have a sense of what really is safe and how actually to protect herself and take care of herself.

And this we can talk about in depth, but the eating disorder is there to come in and make herself safe when she feels that she is in a dangerous position but doesn’t know it, doesn’t understand it, doesn’t recognize it.

And the eating disorder will stop her feelings, will soothe her or make her feel more sure of herself.
