7 Ways to Keep Your 2012 Resolutions All Year Long

The toughest part about New Year’s resolutions is sticking to them. We all know that once February rolls around, your resolutions are as forgotten as the scent of pine needles in your living room. Follow these seven tricks to help you stay on track all year long.

1. Get a Buddy. It’s the oldest trick in the book -- the buddy system. Enlist a friend to exercise with. You can even text or email your fitness friend a virtual food journal to keep you accountable and on track.

2. Write it Down. Grab a notebook or set aside a little corner of your day planner to write down what you eat and if you exercised each day. Be sure to include every bite and every day so you can track your progress.

3. Go Digital. Use your smart phone to get smart. From My Fitness Pal to Weight Tracker, there are dozens and dozens of health and fitness apps to keep you on track. Having your health tracker in your pocket at all times will help remind you of your goals.

4. Tell People. Tell your coworkers, tell your friends, and tell your family. If you’ve told people what your goals are and what you’re doing to achieve them, you’ll be less likely to slip up when you’re in company.

5. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is. Use a bit of tough love and write a check to an organization you DON’T support. (For example, write a check out to the presidential candidate you least want to win the election.) Post that check in a prominent location, set a date, and if you don’t meet your goal mail ’er in.

6. Get Real. The most important way to stick to your goals is to make sure they are realistic. Don’t resolve to lose 20 pounds in a month, resolve to exercise more or eat less sugar.

7. One Step a Day. Resolve to do one thing every day to help you achieve your goal. Even if it’s a small thing that takes just a few minutes, make sure you make it happen every single day, all year long.
