Dr. McLaughlin explains when an oral glucose tolerance test is used.

Dr. McLaughlin:
An oral glucose tolerance test is typically, in a non-pregnant woman, is a 75 gram glucose drink, tastes like a flat Coke or something, and it stimulates the production of insulin and challenges the body’s ability to deal with that glucose load, and I call it a stress test for diabetes. If you can’t maintain a normal glucose at two hours defined as a glucose under 140 mg/dL, then you are at increased risk for developing diabetes.
