Dr. McLaughlin shares what type 2 diabetes is.
Dr. McLaughlin:
Type 2 diabetes is when the body makes insulin, the beta cells in the pancreas can make insulin, but the insulin doesn’t work very well, and that’s called insulin resistance, and as long as the body can compensate and make more insulin, the glucose will remain normal. So a second effect is necessary in which the pancreas, the beta cells in the pancreas, fail to compensate for the insulin resistance and you get what’s called a relative insulin deficiency, and high blood glucose levels will ensue.
