Dr. Shaw describes a blepharoplasty/eyelid lift procedure.
Dr. Shaw:
An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure that eradicates excess skin and fat along the upper and lower eyelids. There are various techniques as well, especially with the lower eyelids, there’s the external approach or the transconjunctival approach. The transconjunctival approach involves an incision inside of the lower lid where these are your eyelashes and the eye sits in here, obviously it’s shielded as adequately. There’s a, from the side that’s the skin then there’s the muscle around the eye and then there’s something called an orbital septum and then the fat.
The standard way of doing lower lid blepharoplasty is through an incision that cuts through all these layers to remove the fat that way. The transconjunctival approach, which is my preference, involves an incision in the inside of the eyelid, right here, which takes the fat out that way. And then the skin is merely shortened or removed.
The nice and the biggest advantage of this technique is that the muscle, the orbicularis oculi muscle and the orbital septum are left totally untouched. So there’s no communication between where the fat was excised and a skin excision. This leads to much faster healing, much less bruising and much less risk for complications.
Dr. Shaw, M.D.:
Dr. Lawrence Shaw, M.D., was born on Long Island, New York in 1954 where he lived through High School. He did his undergraduate studies at Emory University and received his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1979. Dr. Shaw then completed a five-year General Surgery residency and was board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Shaw is a double-boarded Plastic Surgeon, which required 7 years of surgical training alone. Since completing his plastic surgery residency training at the Phoenix Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency in 1986, Dr. Shaw has performed thousands of plastic surgery operations. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify doctors in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Shaw is also certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of regional and national medical societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and he American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
