"But while the detrimental effects of environmental aggressors may be beyond our control, what we put on our skin can be monitored, says Greene. And a number of reactions, both allergic and irritant, can be traced back to one of these culprit ingredients:"

Phthalates are plasticizing agents also called di-n-butyl phthalateS (DBP) and are used in nail polishes, for example. Phthalates are possible carcinogens that may cause birth defects, rashes and eczema.

Shea butter is fine for most people but if you have a nut allergy, watch out. Triclosan is an antibacterial agent used in some soaps and can cause rashes and inflammation.
