GMO’s, pesticides, toxins, organic, natural… these are all buzzwords that are running rampant in the media lately. With all the of the controversial information out there how do we go about choosing the healthiest foods?
Is Organic worth the money?
The short answer is YES! Choosing foods that do not contain pesticides, toxins and synthetic fertilizers is a great idea, but the added cost can be difficult to adjust to. Luckily there is a great resource that is published by the Environmental Working Group that helps to educate people on food contamination levels, helping you to make the best choices for your health whatever your budget.
The Dirty Dozen (In order of contamination)
When possible choose organic versions of these fruits and vegetables.
Apples
Celery
Sweet Bell Peppers
Peaches
Strawberries
Nectarines
Grapes
Spinach
Lettuce
Cucumbers
Blueberries
Potatoes
The Clean 15 (In order of least contamination)
These items contain the least amount of contaminates,
Onions
Sweet Corn
Pineapples
Avocado
Cabbage
Sweet Peas
Asparagus
Mangoes
Eggplant
Kiwi
Cantaloupe
Sweet Potatoes
Grapefruit
Watermelon
Mushrooms
No matter what the item, always be sure to properly wash your produce. And remember that whole foods are always a better choice than processed ones. Just because a processed food is marked “organic” or “all-natural” does not necessarily mean that it is a healthy choice.

Hello Amanda,
Thank you for sharing this information with the EmpowHER community. Indeed, the cost of organic food can be prohibitive to some. Knowing the contamination levels can aid in making healthy and fiscally responsible choices.
