British psychologists have decreed that today, the third Monday of January, is the saddest day of the year for most of us.
Why?
A combination of bad weather, lack of sunlight, being shut in, all the holiday bills coming in from Christmas and New Year and a general malaise that sets in at this time of year.
Based on interviews and other variables (like the rate of absenteeism from work)researchers at the University of Cardiff (Wales) have evidence that this day, dubbed Blue Monday, has more sad people than any other.
According to an MSNBC report, "the equation is broken down into seven variables: (W) weather, (D) debt, (d) monthly salary, (T) time since Christmas, (Q) time since failed quit attempt, (M) low motivational levels and (NA) the need to take action."

I wasn't sad until I heard this...

First of all, I think many who were upset yesterday were those who were working while others had the day off because it was Martin Luther King Jr. day.
Secondly, for many universities, today it the first day of the spring semester and I can name plenty who were not looking forward to going back to all night study sessions, homework, and 8am classes. Additionally, that means many students were on the road driving hours to school or rushing around busy airports.
On the flip side, yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. day so many people had the day off and were very glad about it, so I think they probably out way, or at least cancel out, the previously mentioned, and rightly bummed groups above.
In conclusion, I highly doubt that more people were sad yesterday than any other day in the year.
