Hi,
About 3 years ago I had laproscopic surgery to remove my right ovary due to an ovarian cyst that had been troubling me (severe pain) for about 9 months. About 4 months later the pain has returned. Can I have a cyst where I have no ovary?

BJ, so sorry that you are experiencing pain again after going through this all before.
There are at least a couple of reasons why you might be in pain again. One short answer is yes, it's possible to have a cyst on the side where there is no ovary. But it's rare.
What's more common is Ovarian Remnant Syndrome, where, if even a small amount of tissue was left behind during your surgery, it continues to produce hormones and can form cysts as well. This sometimes affect women who have had hysterectomies, too. Here's an article on ovarian remnant syndrome, explaining how it occurs:

The hormones that the remaining tissue releases can also be a factor in endometriosis, a syndrome in which the endometrial lining of the uterus grows in places where it shouldn't, causing inflammation, adhesions and pain.
Here's a doctor discussing various possible causes of chronic pelvic pain:

You probably need to make another appointment with your gynecologist to see what's going on. A sonogram may give her a better picture of what's causing your pain.
