As the economy expands and becomes increasingly more global, players in the economy must learn to be more efficient and competitive. This can mean that your children will have to become more and more competitive in order to get in to the best college, earn top grades, and eventually get a great job. You can help you children stay competitive in the ever changing modern economy with the 4 tips below.
Hire a Tutor for Your Kids
Grades are important for getting into college. However, grades are more important than earning a certain score on an exam or getting a certain letter grade in a class. Understanding the material your kids are expected to learn is vital to their continued success during college and in the professional world. You can help to make sure your kids are really learning the material they're studying in school by hiring a tutor. There are many tutors in Tacoma and even some online that will be able to guide your children through challenging material in a one-on-one, face-to-face meeting, so they can ask questions and get explanations in a way that suits their own personal learning style.
Prepare for College
Besides just getting good grades, you can help your kids to prepare for college by making sure they have a well-rounded set of experiences that will make them a competitive candidate for any school they wish to attend. This can include selecting challenging classes, building experience in extracurricular activities and volunteer efforts, and preparing for and taking the ACT and SAT exams. A college application that is impressive in many different areas rather than one containing impressive grades but little else will set your child apart from the rest.
Get An Internship
Whether your child completes an internship in college or in high school, the experience will be valuable for several reasons. An internship will help your child get a feel for a particular line of work in the real world, allowing them to determine whether or not it's a great fit for them before actually committing to a full-time job. An internship will also provide real world professional experience to your child and make them better prepared for a job after college. Finally, an internship will demonstrate valuable experience to an employer, and may provide your child with professional references they can use in their job search following college.
Gain Life Experience
Beyond just grades and school, it is important for job seekers and college applicants to be able to demonstrate that they have experience beyond just book smarts and school activities. Your child can learn a foreign language, volunteer, or take part in some productive hobbies to demonstrate that they are a well-rounded individual with skills and interests in many different areas.

Susan,
You are absolutely correct. Our children deserve a chance to be kids and have fun without facing the pressures of adulthood too soon. One of the most important things to do is encourage your children to follow up on their passions. The new global economy is becoming a niche market... people with hybrid skill sets will become increasingly valuable.
Sounds like you are a good mom.
