When traveling over the holidays it is easy to let good exercise habits fall by the wayside. Your regular schedules are disrupted and sometimes more hectic than usual. With the upcoming holiday many of you will travel to visit relatives and friends or maybe head out of town for a warm weather retreat. Where ever your plans may take you, follow these tips to stay fit and trim while on the road.
Make a Commitment
Commit to exercising while on your trip. Plan your workout schedule before you head out of town. Write it down on a yellow sticky pad and put it on a door or mirror where you're sure to see it. By having a constant reminder, you are more likely to stick to your plan.
Do Your Research
Scope out a hotel that has a fitness room or a pool. If you're staying with family search for a local gym that allows you to pay per visit or take a group fitness class per diem. If you prefer to be outdoors then find a route in the area where you can go running or take a brisk walk.
Pack Your Gear
By taking workout gear you will have one less excuse when it comes time to exercise. Be sure to pack sneakers, a few pairs of shorts and some comfy tops in your suit case. Charge your iPod, throw in in your carry on and you will be ready to go. If you won't have access to workout facilities while you’re away take some resistance bands with you. They’re light, versatile and easy to pack. While you are it, bring a jump rope too.
Get Up and At Em!
Wake up a half hour early and get your workout in before you start your day. By exercising first thing in the morning you will jump-start your metabolism, have more energy and set the tone for healthy choices throughout the day. Though your intentions may be good, the longer you put off your workout, the less likely it is to happen. As the day goes on many distractions will come up that could interfere with your exercise plan.
Be Creative
If time is of the essence exercise in your hotel room. It doesn't have to be fancy, use your own body weight for resistance. If you work hard enough, 20 minutes is all you need. A combination of pushups, squats, dips and walking lunges make for a great workout. Keep the reps high and the pace quick to keep up your heart rate. Finish off with a few sets of the plank and some crunches for a total body burn.
Recruit a Partner
Invite a friend, family member or co-worker to exercise with you. Working out with a partner can be fun, motivating and make the time fly by. And chances are you won't skip out on your workout if someone else is counting on you.
Just Move
If you miss out on your morning workout then try to stay as active as possible throughout the day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator during your travels. When sightseeing, walk around as much as possible. If you're visiting family plan an afternoon shopping trip or go for a walk while you chat it up with friends. If you're out of town on business take a break in between your meetings and stretch. Just keep moving to burn calories and lessen your chances of weight gain.
