Every family that has a love for animals should have a pet. However, many, many families have one or more member of the crew that face tough allergies when it comes to dogs or cats. This can be particularly hard, because many children still really would love to be around dogs or cats. Caring for a pet is a wonderful opportunity to teach your children responsibility, and the love you get back from your pet is good for the entire family's mental, physical and emotional well-being. While dogs and cats are wonderful choices for a family pet, they sometimes prove to be too difficult to have around for health or other reasons. Fortunately, there are many other pets that will make a great contribution as a member of your family.
1. Guinea Pigs
These are terrific little pets that are highly unlikely to bite or scratch. Once they know their owner, they are content to lay on your lap to be petted and scratched. They will almost always happily nibble on a lettuce leaf or carrot stick held in your hand, and custom harnesses are made for guinea pigs so you can walk your pet outside.
2. Hamsters
Hamsters can be quite comfortable in a cage designed just for them that your child can keep on the dresser in the bedroom. They enjoy being gently held and will eat out of your child's hand. To avoid bites, make sure your child always washes his hands before handling the hamster as this eliminates any scents that may encourage a bite. Your hamster will love running on a wheel in its cage and will also delight the family if you purchase a separate hamster ball that allows it to roll all around the house during playtime.
3. Parakeets
These birds come in a variety of gorgeous colors, and they will fill your home with happy chirps all day long. If you spend time with your parakeet each day, they will quickly learn to recognize your voice and enjoy spending time with you. With daily training, a parakeet can soon learn to fly to you and sit on your finger.
4. Rabbits
These animals are actually quite smart, and they can be litter-box trained just like a cat. While a little bit on the nervous side, they will become great pets once they get to know their owners. Gentle handling and petting them while feeding them lettuce are great ways to get them accustomed to you. Harnesses made specifically for rabbits are available, so you can even take your rabbit for a walk outside and let it nibble on grass in the yard. Instead of the classic dog house, you might get a hutch from a company like Eggshell Hutches. Rabbits can be quite fun and offer some of the benefits of cats and dogs.
Whatever pet you choose, you should ensure that it is a good fit for the needs, time, and size of your family. Just remember to take good care of your pet, and it will be a good and loyal member of your family for its entire life.
