The other day I was doing my usual morning routine before work, drinking my coffee, slowly getting ready for the day and of course watching my beloved TODAY Show when a story really caught my attention.
This story was about a doctor in Michigan who told his patients they had cancer (some didn't have cancer at all) and was giving them unnecessary chemotherapy. This was all part of a $35 MILLION dollar fraud.
Dr. Farid Fata, was a trusted oncologist who preyed on any patient he could to get more money in the bank for himself. Most of these patients didn't need chemotherapy and some were "end of life" patients who would not benefit from chemo at all.
His motivation was clear, money. He billed Medicare for false claims which in turn defrauded the government and taxpayers of $35 million dollars. All the while innocent (some cancer free all together) patients went through grueling unnecessary chemo treatments.
As sad as this story is it does shed some light on one important fact, always always always get a second opinion. In any major health issue it never hurts for you or any loved one to get a second opinion just to make sure. Knowledge is power and the power is yours when it comes to your health.
Do you believe in second opinions or have you been misdiagnosed by a doctor?
