I am a breast cancer survivor of over 5 years! My husband who is many years older than I have been married 47 yrs and he has had dementia for about 15 years. Sept. 5 he fell and broke his wrist in several places, causing him to have surgery and then rehab, and due to side effects I was forced to placing him in a private nursing home. Prior to Sept. 5, I was walking or swimming daily, doing the normal routine which included working with my rose bushes, I WAS OUT IN THE SUN part of each day! Well, from the time my husband was hospitalized until about 2 mo ago I was either in the hospital or nursing facility 8 to 24 hrs per day! The the last couple months I've been dealing with the "paperwork" and other stuff, all of which was indoors. Since maybe mid Oct. I have been CRYING, then I finally realized I was depressed, THAT IS NOT ME! I have always awoke with a smile on my face and a song in my heart. JOY: one of my favorite bible quote is "Joy cometh in the Morning" Ps 30:5! But now I'm crying, not able to talk without tears....HOWEVER, I have the answer, my GYN did vit. D. level check last week and I'm very low: 11.4....and what is one of the side effects of low vit. D. DEPRESSION...so as soon as I get this story posted I'm out the door to walk and start Full exposure, no sunglasses either as Vitamin D is absorbed best thru the eyes and skin. Also, later today I will be online to buy Vit. D supplement as my doctor recommends 1000 units of supplement per day!

Hi I live in FL and believe it or not I was deficient too at 25.After 10,000 IU a day I'm up to 65 after 3 months...so you might want to check your supplement. I'd go higher to make a difference!!
February 12, 2011 - 8:10am(especially if you have absorption problems. I have hashimotos..and I used to run and mow lawn and sit with kids outside while they swam in the pool..there was no reason I should have been deficient. I'm in the sun everyday for hours for 9 months a year!

Princeline - Thanks for sharing your story, and I'm sure it will help others. In addition to sunshine and supplements, you can also get Vitamin D through your diet. https://www.empowher.com/healthy-eating/content/delicious-d-s-ways-get-more-vitamin-d-your-diet
