I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience with Boniva. My doctor wants me to start taking it but I alwys worry about side effects. So if you take this drug has it helped you ? How long did you have to wait till you knew if it was doing you any good? I took Evista for seven years before finding, in spite of yearly bone denisty tests, it was not helping me. Also did anyone have negative side effects? Thanks

Ok..I found it. We're actually in the process of doing a story on all the different Osteoporosis drugs that are currently on the market like Boniva and Fossomax. Also, all the new drugs which have recently been approved by the FDA.
Amgen is the pharmaceutical company coming out with a new drug that's supposed to be amazing with little to no side effects. The article was in the NY Times a few weeks ago. I can't remember the name of the drug but since we're doing a story on it, stay tuned to learn about all the Osteoporosis drugs. How they work, what the side effects are, and what you can do to try to reverse Osteoporosis.

Here's a link to an article we have on a new drug to treat osteoporosis https://www.empowher.com/news/2009/07/24/forteo-approved-drug-related-osteoporosis
It's not the drug I was talking about thought. This new drug was in the WSJ or the NY Times last week or the week before. I'm going to see if I can find it.
Hope this helps.

There are a lot of new Osteoporosis drugs coming out on the market. One in particular, I'm sure I posted about a few weeks ago. I know it's out of the clinical trial phase in a few months and is about to be approved. It supposedly has no side effects. Can you try something else besides Boniva for now? Can you hold off for a while until this new drug is approved? You may have to take something short term. I'd try exercise, changing your diet and if you've had a hysterectomy and or are in menopause, you may need something to help you. Maybe hormone replacement therapy? Do you feel like you have a great doctor? Did they run a bunch of blood tests on you to what your hormone levels looked like?
Let's see if I can find the information on the new drug. I'll be back in touch!

I have been researching the side effects of Boniva, and the information I have found does seem to parallel other's experiences:
- "BONIVA, like other bisphosphonates administered orally, may cause upper gastrointestinal disorders such as dysphagia, esophagitis, and esophageal or gastric ulcer."
- "Severe and occasionally incapacitating bone, joint, and/or muscle pain has been reported in patients taking BONIVA and other bisphosphonates."

I would advise anyone about to take Bonive, DON'T!!!!! I took the once a month dosage for 3 months and will NEVER take it again. First month had major upper stomach problems and muscle twitches. Didn't put the symptoms with the Boniva. Started to feel better by end of month, second month stomach upsets and muscle twitches, but by end of month waned. Third month, WATCH OUT! Day after taking third dose, felt like I got hit by a train. Felt terrible all over, but couldn't relax. Calf muscles ached and twitched, constant acid and sour taste in mouth. Now getting sores in mouth, also suffering from mood swings. I was once a happy healthy 53 yr old female, now I don't know if I will ever be the same. From what I have read about this poison, they call Boniva, it may take up to five years to fully leave your body. Just cause it workss for Sally, doesn't mean it will work for you!!!

Have long has it been since you've stopped taking Boniva, and how do you feel now? You said you "may never feel the same"? Can you explain?
Did your doctor confirm your symptoms were from this medication? Did s/he prescribe you any other medication or treatment?

I had a backache that is so bad, that I have difficulty walking, breathing, or staying in any position very long. Since I haven't done anything different since taking the pill, both my doctor and I believe it is a side effect from Boniva.

Typically, if there is a possible side effect to a medication I experience it but I have taken Boniva for 3 months and experienced none. Evista gave me horrible leg cramps as did Miacalcum (sp). My fingers are crossed that Boniva is the right drug for me.

I took Boniva four days ago and within one day I had a backache that is so bad, that I have difficulty walking, breathing, or staying in any position very long. Since I haven't done anything different since taking the pill, both my doctor and I believe it is a side effect from Boniva. I am so sorry I took this. I have rheumatoid arthritis and about 6 months ago I started with a new rheumatologist who gave me medication that removed all the pain. I was beginning to believe I would just have to endure daily pain but plaquenal and mobic did the trick. However, now I am in extreme pain and this is the third day. The pain eases at times but is still extreme. I'm just hoping it will go away.
