Q:

Why would I have an enlarged lymph node in my breast?

I am a 30 y.o. female with no family history of breast cancer. I found a lump in my right breast a short while ago. Over the next few weeks I had 2 sets of mammograms and an ultrasound done. I called my gyn daily to get the results of the tests, and when they finally came in the FNP returned my call. She stated that it was benign, and when I questioned her further she said it was an enlarged lymph node. Not being a pushy person, and I didn't really have any questions prepared for this scenario I let it go and hung up. Now I can't find any info online for why I would have an enlarged lymph node in my breast. From what I'm finding it must not be a common place, because I have yet to find anything.

So, my question is...Is this something that should be further tested? It is still the same size as when I found it about a month and a half ago. The only other symptom I am having is that occasionally my breast will ache slightly. It's usually only for a few seconds and it quits. It occurs maybe 1-2 times a day.

Anon,

It's been a couple months since you wrote, and I was wondering if there had been any change? Is the node still swollen? Painful? Does it seem cyclical? (In other words, does it seem to change along with your menstrual cycle?) Just wanted to check in and see how you were doing. Hope all is well.

Hello everyone, its funny, with Leptin Resistance and Hashi's, and not having enough thyroid in my system and not being able to absorb the meds correctly, my Dr increased my Armour to 180MG and I feel fantastic, my lympnoids are smaller, amazing. I asked him why they would enlarge and he stated that my body's couldn't fight off anything. This also caused me to have absecess between my legs that were very painful. Abscesses are now all gone and lympnoids are decressed in size. He said my body was having a hard time fighting off infections. Since being put on Armour 1 year ago, I am a completely changed person inside and out. I have lost 50lbs without even trying, my cholestoral is back in the normal range, I'm not Hypoglasimic any longer, my abcesses are gone and my lymphnoids are decressed in size. Most important, I feel fantastic. Does any of you have Hashi's or been tested for it? I would be interested to find this out. Please excuse my spelling too...LOL

I too have hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's & I also have a lump in my left breast. I just had a mammo & US yesterday & it was determined to be a lymph node as well. I have been diagnosed with hypo for a little over a year. My TSh was 289 at first & I have had a hard time getting it down. I am now on 125 mg of thyroxazine & have been for 2 months. I just had labs done on Friday & it is finally in the normal range...1.74. This blog has made me feel a tremendous amount of relief as I could not fathom why my node would be swollen in my breast. I am not nor have I been ill other than the hypo. I have been having a small amount of discharge from that breast but ni indication of infection. Thanks for all the comments!!!!!!

Hi, Distump,

All I have to say is Wow! What a turnaround you have experienced! It just goes to show how important our thyroid glands are and how many things they affect when they are not working correctly. Your story is inspiring. I bet it makes many women vow to have their thyroid levels tested.

Here is a two-part series written by our founder, Michelle King Robson, on her journey through thyroid testing and finally finding what worked for her. It's a must-read for anyone who thinks this might be part of your problem:

I just returned from an appointment and discovered that I too have the same thing. My doctor is suggesting the wait and see. I have only known about my lump for a few months ( I wasn't diligent about checking for quite some time before that). To me it seems like it has gotten bigger in this short time, but how does one really know for sure?? On the ultrasound it measured 7mm x 7mm x 3mm. From the outside feeling in - lol! it feels way bigger today. I know mine is really tiny, but I still would like it out. How big do they need to be before they will do a biopsy?

Anon,

How long does your doctor want you to wait before he examines and measures the lump again?

When was your last mammogram and/or ultrasound?

Is your doctor sure that this is an enlarged lymph node? Did he suggest that it might be swollen due to an infection?

Or are you still anxious that it might be something else?

Here is one link for lymph node biopsies. It has several pages' worth of information but it doesn't specify how large a lump is before it is biopsied. I'm sure that this is an individual thing between most doctors and their patients, depending on patient history and the actual lump itsef:

http://www.webmd.com/cancer/lymph-node-biopsy

Here's some more information on armpit lumps:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003099.htm

And one more page with information about lymph nodes and lumps (read all the way to the bottom for how they determine when to do a biopsy):

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003099.htm

Does this information help a little? Is there more than you can tell us?

Ladies, I have found some interesting information. Recently I did a search on Hashi's and being overweight. I came across an article and had my doctor test me for Leptin Resistance. My leptin serum is 36.8H. Normal Females are 1.1 to 27.5 and Obese Females are 2.1 to 29. Are you guys overweight? High Glucose Corn Syrup is killing us and causing us issues. I can't eat anything that has this in it. I'm going to try this diet and see if it helps my lymp noid go away in my left breast.
