why do i need double lenses, for reading and far seeing, what are the advantages?

I am nearsighted too, so I know how you feel. We have such perfect vision up close that it seems redundant to wear glasses (or contacts) for far vision and then need lenses for close vision as well.

In your case (as in mine), since we have good near vision, the bottom part of the "bifocal" can just be plain glass. In other words, the top part of the glasses would correct your far vision, but the bottom part of your glasses would just be clear glass. This would mean you don't constantly have to take your glasses off to read and put them back on to see farther away.

Alison is right, old bifocals (or "double lenses" as you call them) used to have a little "line" that other people could see that separated the lenses. But now it's just one smooth surface with no line.

I am surprised, since you are nearsighted, that you just started wearing glasses two weeks ago. Was that the first time you ever had your eyes checked?

There are many advances in eyeglasses, that provide the wearer with many options so that you do not need separate "reading glasses", and do not need to remove your eyeglasses to see one thing...then put them on to see another object.

You can speak with your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist about your need for bifocals; no one will even know you are wearing them (they used to have a distinct line, and now the lenses on the glasses are made for you specifically...a lens that helps you see far away PLUS a lens that helps you see close up...where you need it, all in one pair of glasses!)
