Q:

Why do I end up with an upper respiratory infection, bronchitis when I get the flu or a cold?

I had my first episode of this 7 years ago and ended up in the hospital. It seems like I get it at least once a year now. Could there be some underlying cause?

Hello. Thank you for posting.

We can't know why this seems to happen. For some people, a weakened immune system can make them more susceptible to infections.

Ways you can avoid getting bronchitis:
Don't smoke.
Don't allow others to smoke in your home or around you.
Stay away from or reduce your time around things that irritate your nose, throat, and lungs, such as dust or pets.
If you catch a cold, get plenty of rest.
Take your medicine exactly the way your doctor tells you.
Eat a healthy diet.
Wash your hands often.
Do not share food, cups, glasses, or eating utensils.
