I used to have perfectly rounded fingernails across my nail bed, but have noticed over the years that my thumbnails are becoming flat. Am I not eating enough protein? What is causing this? It's been happening for about two years.

I mentioned the change in my thumbnails to my endocronologist (thyroid conditions) yesterday. He said flat thumbnails can be a sign of iron deficiency. So- he is having my iron tested.

The same thing is happening to me. I am a 25 year old male. I have noticed this only with my thumbnails. It is mostly happening on my right thumb, but it is also starting on my left. I started noticing this about a year ago.

Dear Anon, thank you for your posting. I'd like some clarification though, how do you mean by "flat"? Are the nail beds (skin beneath your nail) changing shape or is it the actual nail? Have you noticed if this is the case just with the thumb nails? Are these breaking more easily and have become thinner? Do you use your thumb nails at work doing repetitive work? It will be helpful if you could provide more information. Thanks!

My actual nails are becoming flat, starting in the middle. Just the thumbnails. They are not thinner or breaking. I do not use them for any work. I do not use polish. This has been happening for years. The flat surface is becoming larger. What do you know about this? Thanks.
