Q:

What's the ideal temperature of a home?

Is there a general concensus about what the temperature of a house should be? I know that advice has been given about having a home too warm or too cold but am not sure what a healthy temperature is.

I like a very warm house in winter but don't like the attached bills!

We keep our programmable thermostat at 68 degrees F. We have kids but we're all healthy with no special needs. Honestly, I'd like it higher but I want to save on energy costs, be a bit more envioronmentally conscious and 68 degrees works well, as our house is newer and very well insulated.

Any opinions?

I am from Minnesota and here the temperature outside affects your inside temperature, no matter what insulation you have. It can be 100 degrees here and it can be -40 degrees. 60 degrees in -40 feels different than 60 degrees in the summer. Set your thermostat to what feels comfortable in a light sweater in the winter (a little below the freezing point) and your pajamas in the summer. Blankets are to put on when it is -40 and still have the same temperature. There is nothing I hate more than a house that is too cold in the summer.

I think 68 is the best for the summer and 75 for the winter

I agree with you. Wish I had a dehumidifier this summer (Toledo OH- was mild temps, but humid a lot, not enough for the AC to dehumidify without cutting the AC below 75).

75 degrees?! You're out of your mind. Congratulations on your hideously wasteful and selfish habits!

I keep my house at 71 degrees all year round and I don't care who likes it... don't like it don't come to my house. It is that simple... As for wasteful selfish habits. Yes I have them, no one else is going to look out for me but me so why not. I don't care if people get upset over it cause well there is nothing anyone can do about it and its my life.

I totally agree , anything above 68 degrees is ridiculous in the wintertime it's easier for the cold blooded people to put clothes on than to take clothes off for people to actually get hot! it's not healthy to breath in the hot dry air ! I'm a registered nurse and I know that it's bad for you to be at (>68) temperature !, your body will succumb to infections , dry coughing dry eyes dry mucous membranes etc.people also do not rest well in the heat as the cool weather, they don't they have The feelings of exhaustion and lethargy , decreased energy etc. from the heat

As a nurse, I'm surprised you aren't aware of how some people need warmer temperatures, esp. if they are very thin or ill. If I lived in the temperature you suggest, I would be ill. I know b/c I have tried it. I canNOT sleep in the cold; I just shiver. If I'm lucky enough to sleep at that temp. I wake not feeling rested.
As for clothes, I prefer not to have to wear a coat in my own home or to walk around with a blanket wrapped around me. Comfort and health should trump conservation. We can all probably handle dropping a couple degrees to conserve energy if we really need to, but the blanket statement you made is not accurate for everyone (even though it may be true for a large number of people).

For me, summer 79; winter 68, night 55. Your body can adapt.

I didn't get it. why set the room temp in the summer is colder than that in the winter? is this the way the Americans waste the energy?
