What side effects can come from a lower back injury?

I hurt my lower back last week. Since then my lower abdomen has been hurting (like a menstrual cramp pain). My legs hurt and up my sides along my ribcage. I stand on my feet all day at work however my legs and lower abdomen don't hurt til I'm at home sitting with my legs bent either to the side of me or under me. I just didn't know if I should go to a family doctor or a chiropractor.

It definitely sounds like a lumbar spine issue. I am a huge advocate of chiropractics. That being said, it is important to have a good chiropractor that you have an established relationship with. If you do have a chiro, it is possible to be evaluated by the chiro, and most offices offer x-ray services. If you are in pain this evening, I often suggest to my clients to take a 15 minute Epsom salt bath (2 cups Epsom salt, hot bath), and drink plenty of water while you soak. Once out of the bath, try placing an icepack on your lower back for approximately 10 minutes. Good luck!December 8, 2011 - 10:59pm

If I don't have a family doctor would it be ok to go to a urgent care center?

Definitely make an appointment to be evaluated by your family doctor. I think you need an x-ray of your lower back.

You may have injured one of the spinal discs in the lumbar region. The discs can be thought of as spinal shock absorbers.
