So many women are on different forms of birth control today whether it's to prevent pregnancy or for other reasons. What happens when a woman suddenly stops taking birth control? What happens to her body and what should she be prepared for?

Hi Erin,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

When a woman begins taking the pill her body goes thru changes like lighter periods and fewer cramps to name a few.

Likewise, when she stops taking birth control her body will respond to going off hornones,  Here are a few possible symptoms to be prepared for:

  • Heavier periods / Worse cramps
  • Lost of weight
  • Breast shrinkage
  • More vaginal discharge
  • Improved sex drive
  • Worse PMS symptoms
  • Acne may return
  • You become very fertile

I hope this helps.

Be well,

~Gillette
