What to expect?

I have recently gotten off of the depo shot. I was supposed to get my second shot on the 19th but decided not to. What side effects could I watch out for and when might I get my period again? I also had some light bleeding two weeks ago.

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing!

Many women have no side effects after stopping birth control. But some have reported uncomfortable side effects including nausea, breast tenderness and headaches with fatigue.

You may get your period a few days after stopping or several weeks - all women are different.

If your skin was more clear and you lost weight due to taking birth control, you may find acne returns or you gain a few pounds. You may experience PMS and it's likely your period will be heavier.

Essentially, your reproductive system will return to where it was before you started the Depo shot but it can take a few months for side effects to wear off.

If you still want to avoid pregnancy, make sure not to have unprotected sex.

Best,
Susan
