Follow some simple tips like never skip meals, eat a serotonin-enhancing diet, expose yourself to sunlight which can help you to increase the Vitamin D levels etc.

I agree with Maryann. When i was 13 years old my mother passed away from kidney and liver cancer. Before her time to go she took me to her native country and left me to live with my father (whom i only knew through pictures). I never lived in that country prior to my trip with her. Two months after leaving me there she passed away. Reality sunk in very quickly as i had to live without her and adapt to a new country all at once.

I am not 31 and it is a constant struggle but i have managed to keep it under control without medication. I keep a journal that i write in every nigh. I keep my goals at realistic levels for myself. I do not share feelings with friends and family, many people do not understand depression. It is very real and in my case a daily battle due to loss of a loved one. I would advise meditation, alone time to reflect and regroup and also to keep a journal. I recently started a new hobby and it also helps, I'm learning to paint on canvas. Recognize when it is there and give yourself space.

I hope this is of help

Hello ALynnV,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. Thank you for asking about natural ways to cope with depression.

First, a person must determine that she is indeed suffering with depression. Everyone will occasionally feel sad. Generally, these feelings are short lived and pass in a few days.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.

Physical exercise can reduce depression symptoms. Engage in an activity that you enjoy such as gardening, swimming or walking.

A restful night's sleep is important for physical and mental well-being.

Avoid alcohol and illegal drugs, which both generally worsen symptoms and make depression harder to treat.
