I feel your pain....I had the same experience and I felt I was being tortured from within. Indescribable pain which I vow never to go through again. I’ve got a pretty strong pain barrier having had 2 good sized boys with episiotomy (barbaric!!!) and that colonoscopy was fookin’ horrendous. I woke up in middle of procedure wrestling with 4 doctors and nurses who were trying to restrain me and the breathing tube was pulled out of my throat whilst awake. The doc said “wow you’re so resilient, I gave you more drugs than I’ve ever given anyone before ..to keep you sedated”

WTF!!!! I was crying uncontrollably and he was almost mocking me!! Wot a Twat!

I will stick pins in my eyes and go to sleep on hot coals before I EVER have THAT done to me again!!

Oh and just to top it off....I woke up to banded haemorroids and could hardly walk for a week! Yurghhh yak! Thrrrp!

I woke up screaming during procedure, Dr said in letter was due to visceral hypersensitivity. And next time they would have to put me all the way under instead of just heavy sedation

I went back to my doc on jan 7 that ask me 2 get them test done and they told me they did give me more sedation but then my breathing went bad so they had to give me medication to reverse it and thats why i woke up to quick the next time u have to go back to ur doc u should tell him or her what way u felt and ask what happened during ur endoscopy they will have an answer for u. My doc told me because im after being on so much medication over the years is another reason why the sedation didnt work properly on me an if i was to ever get sleeping pills id need a high dose so it would take affect hope ur doc will have answers for u. Hope 2 hear from u soon, all the best

I too woke up during an endoscopy..I was having the dilation of the
esophagus....it felt like he was opening up my chest...he asked me
if what he was doing was hurting me and I nodded my head and he
told the nurse to give me more medication....I woke up right after..
wide awake!! My chest was very sore for a week after. If I need
another follow-up - I will ask for more medication..that was not fun
at all!!

Hello Alison

i live in ireland - dublin. they dont give anesthesia over here for these type of procedures they only sedate people every other person that got coloscopy on that day didnt have the experience i had. i didnt talk to anyone in the hospial about what happened but the patients everytime i think about it im remembering more about it my doctor did come into me after it an told me i wouldnt remember him talking to him after he was gone ut i remember everything he said, i dont know if he just covering his own back by saying it, its all very confusing about it im back in the hospital on 14th of this month for my gastroenterology which that doctor done the endoscopy last year when i had the same problem an nothing was done about it this time round i dont know what to be doing about it, your advise would help me so much if you have advise for me thank you Alison

I am not sure if you have talked with other patients, but here are a few options:

1. Find another doctor with a better reputation whom you trust
2. Talk with a Patient Advocate in the hospital about your experience

Being sedated does include having anesthesia, and I am unclear about your conversation with your doctor, and whether you have actually talked with patients or just "hearsay", but please talk with the hospital, your insurance company or another Patient Advocate. Can you find another doctor?

I am so sorry to hear that you have recurrent experiences with medical procedures in which you are not given enough anesthesia.

We will need to do some more research into possible causes, and what you can do.

Can you tell us:
- Do you live in the United States?
- Have you talked with your doctors, anesthesiologist, hospital, patient advocate, etc?
