Is there any truth to the rumor that potatoes cure hemorrhoids?

I had a relative tell me she used potatoes to help cure her hemorrhoids. How can this be?

Sort of...this home remedy is not a cure, but more of a temporary relief for hemorrhoids.

I did read an article that a mixture of potatoes (blended with water; makes a type of watered-down-mashed-potato paste) may help provide some relief from the irritation, when applied topically. I believe (not sure) that it may be the alkaloids in the potato, as they have a potential anti-inflammatory effect.

According to the NCCAM, horse chestnut leaves can also provide relief as a natural herb.

After my labor & delivery, I was given instructions to use a sitz bath and witch hazel pads, which are extremely common to relive swelling, itching and irritation from hemorrhoids. Chilled witch hazel pads worked great, and both can be found at pharmacies. Sitting in a warm bath, drying off completely (and gently!) also works, and is drug-free.
