Sinus infections, how can I prevent them?

Hi, I've had two bad sinus infections in the last 5 weeks - I'm currently recovering from another one. Along with this sinus infection I also have an upper respiratory infection currently on antibiotics and prednisone to help with my asthma. The sinus infection is clearing up by my chest is still tight. Besides the prednisone, I'm also using the nebulizer as need (which is at least 3/4 times a day). I'm going on 6 days of being on the meds, shouldn't my chest be feeling better by now?

I asked the doctor what I could do to help prevent these sinus infections and he said to keep taking my preventative meds (Advair diskus 250/50 and flonase). I've also have tried oil of oregano and the neti pot, but still ended up with a sinus infection. But that doesn't seem to be enough, any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Angelica,
I have found a vast amount of information on prevention strategies of allergies, sinus infections and cold/flu transmission, as well as information related to how one of these conditions can cause the other condition to become worse:

- Allergens Worsen Sinusitis
- Keep Asthma and Allergies at Bay for the Holidays
- Three tips on sinus and allergy prevention (Expert Video)
- Allergy and Sinus Infections: What is the Connection? (Expert Video)
- Is it common for allergies to trigger asthma?

I hope this information helps!

Hi Alison,
Yes, I do suffer from seasonal allergies and my asthma is triggered by them. I live in Arizona and the doctor did say that allergies are bad here this year. Any preventative suggestions to help me out would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Angelica

Angelica,
It sounds like you are receiving good care by your doctor, I know it feels like you have been sick for a long time! Conditions like recurrent sinus infections and chest congestion can take months before you feel completely "back to normal", especially during the winter months and with asthma.

Continue taking your preventive medication, as well as your treatment medications. Do you know what triggers your asthma? Do you also suffer from seasonal allergies? Are you in an environment where you are exposed to colds and flu? There are some preventative strategies to help protect yourself from becoming re-infected with another cold, that could lead to another sinus infection; let us know if this is something you would be interested in!
