Im in desperate need of help. A mother of three children my youngest is 7 months old. I have been struggling with severe postpartum anxiety she was about 4 weeks old. I never had any type of mental health issue or any trouble with postpartum with my other two children I am desperately seeking help I have started hormone replacement therapy. I sought help from my family doctor and was given first lexapro then zoloft both made me incredibly anxious with severe panic.. It would make my legs and arms flail helplessly for hours at a time pulled my hair scratched my skin and didn't sleep for days. I got off of those meds quickly as I couldn't take it anymore. I thought help from a psychiatrist that is not really all that helpful she is actually a resident that doesn't bother to call me back when I really need the help. I am seeking counseling as well. The psychiatrist started me on Lamictal as a mood stabilizer. And seroquel for sleep. I am struggling badly. I feel like this will never end. I'm hurting so bad. I need some suggestions on meds that will help. Everyone told me just put it out of your mind don't worry about things. However for me its not worry it's terrible physical symptoms like nausea shaking diarrhea vomiting. I have a terrible in or restlessness. I have been given klonopin to help with that exciting however I do not wish to take it as it is a benzo and I would rather not get on something that I will depend upon later. Any assistance with my problems would be greatly appreciated I am a productive member of society a loving mother of three children and a college instructor. I never thought this would happen to me. I am losing hope.

Hello. I notice that this post is a little dated, but how are you doing? Sorry to hear you are going through this as I have been there myself. Have you had your thyroid checked? I had postpartum thyroiditis once and it caused all the symptoms you mentioned. Hope all is well.

Hello Anonymous,

I know that you are a loving mother and wonderful human being who will get through this difficult time.

Postpartum depression can be looked at as a complication of giving birth. It is very real, as you know, and not something that you get over by putting it out of your head, as some well meaning individuals are counseling you to do.

The dramatic drop in estrogen and progesterone levels after childbirth contributes to postpartum depression. This would explain the choice of hormone replacement therapy.

Emotional factors play a role. As the mother of three children, one being an infant, you are probably sleep deprived. You might feel less attractive because of the inevitable changes we all go through following pregnancy.
You may even struggle with your sense of identity. Do you feel that now you are simply your children's mother and not who you once were before?

I appreciate your feeling about the medications that have been prescribed and the concern of how they make you feel as well as the potential dependency upon them.

I cannot offer any recommendations for medication. Will any of your family members or close friends offer to babysit? This might give you time for a nap, or time for some quiet mommy-time. Better yet, an evening out with your husband. It need not be an expensive night on the town. Just some time for you to be alone and together.

A support group of mothers who are experiencing postpartum depression may be something to look into. Check with your obstetrician's office or the maternity unit of your local hospital.

You are not alone. There is help out there.

Keeping you in my prayers,
Maryann

thank you for your response. My problem if not my children I have 3 under 6 I love them so deeply and want to spend every moment with them I am NOT sleep deprived of my husband has decided to completely take over all night duties. I am unable to sleep on my own therefore I am unable to nap. I have to take seroquel to sleep at night. I was waking night with severe panic attacks. This has never happened to me and I just don't know what to do.
