Q:

PCOS, may be pregnant??

Hi! I have PCOS, I was diagnosed when I was about 17 - 18 years old. I was normal until I started BC pills when I was 15. I wasn't very good about taking them, so my mom put me on the Depo shot at 15. I only had ONE shot. After that, my periods stopped coming. My mom tested every month to check to see if I was pregnant (which I was not!). My doctor put me on BC pills again to regulate my periods. Yaz-B was great, then I ran out of my pills when I moved in with my father when we moved to Tennessee and he didn't sign me up for a OB/GYN visit in our new town. When I moved back home with my mother, she took me to the doctor to get a new script. Again, stopped taking them because I just started forgetting and being lazy. (I know, it's bad...) A few months later, my periods stopped and I was in a ton of pain one day. I thought my appendix burst. My mom took me to the ER and they couldn't find anything wrong, and then a Dr took me to ultrasound where she found I had cysts in my ovaries.

I've gone to my OB/GYN about once a year. I've even seen an Endocrinologist about my PCOS. He thinks I may also have an immune system problem? I'm not sure. So, to catch up the present. I haven't had a period since October 2015. Before that, it was maybe August? In 2015, I only about 4 periods? MAYBE 5. But that's really it. About 3 days ago (Saturday), I noticed some brownish/red discharge. I know that sometimes that's how my period comes (especially when I haven't had one in a long time). It didn't really change into a flow or anything. I anticipated it the next day (Sunday, March 5), but just had some of the same brown discharged that turned to light spotting, but not a lot to wear a pad or tampon with. Barely anything. I proceeded to have intercourse that evening, afterwards, I did notice that when I went to the restroom, I was bleeding. But not like a normal period flow. It was just heavier spotting? I wore a liner to bed, and when I woke up for work on Monday, there was a small amount of blood (about a dollar coin size). I wore a tampon to work, and when I went to change it, there was barely anything? So, I changed it out to a lighter flow size. When I went to change it out, there was nothing? I wore a liner rest of the day and night, and nothing but light light spotting, if that? I'm just wondering I may be pregnant? I have had some severe head aches with nausea, but not vomiting. I took a test a few weeks ago, and it was negative. Did a cyst maybe burst? Or am I pregnant? Or maybe even just have a super weird period? Help me :(

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern.

You had intercourse after the bleeding started. Had you had unprotected intercourse prior to the discharge which started three days ago?

Anonymous, you have an unusual menstrual cycle history, so I suggest you contact your gynecologist about this. Your physician may order blood tests to check hormone levels. Please keep us updated.

Regards,
Maryann
