Any tips on parenting an 11 year old in chronic pain? He doesn't want to be around kids his own age any more because they have no understanding of what he is going through. I'm trying to help him not be self-centered--VERY hard! Any tips for those who have been there would be greatly appreciated!

My child has POTS, a type of dysautonomia that makes him feel like he has the stomach flu every day for 12-18 hours--only with chest pains, acid reflux, and migraine, too. We've been to doctors in three states over the last 6 months. They can't stop the pain. He *may* grow out of it in 10 or 15 years, if he's "lucky."

Hi,
June 28, 2011 - 11:40amI am so sorry to hear that your child is suffering physically from chronic pain and emotionally from not being with other children who understand. You didn't mention the cause of your son's pain. I bring this up, because I wonder if a support group with parents and other children who share the same diagnosis might be helpful for both of you. Your son could socialize and play with children who do understand and are dealing with the same condition. You would have the support and network of parents with the same issues.
I have no personal experience or advice to share. I wish that I did. Hopefully, a reader will come forward with some helpful advice.
