I had a flu shot Sept. 2008 and remember it hurt when given. Since then I have pain in my upper arm and shoulder (it's now been a year). I believe it is nerve damage from the needle going to deep. I have had an MRI. meds and now going to Chiro with no relief. I cant't put my arm behind my back or lift it over my head and forget about putting weight on it. Does anyone know of relief for this condition?

Thanks

I had my flu shot 6 weeks ago into my left arm. It was given too close to the acromion process not in the deltoid where I would admin an intramuscular injection. (I'm a nurse). I had immediate pain/swelling/warmth at the site and severe pain in my forearm. Im experiencing a lot of the same symptoms as my fellow flu shot victims. Pain when mobilizing my arm, getting dressed, achy at rest, and increased pain when laying flat. The pain is in my rotator cuff, bicep, tricep, elbow, forearm, and 2 weeks ago my axillary nodes became swollen and tender and my left breast went up a cup size.
I've been seen by several different Physicians.....to get different opinions, and thats what I ended up with. Each gave me a different diagnosis from bursitis, tendonitis, nerve damage and frozen shoulder. But they all agreed that it was from an improper injection technique. I asked one of the Physiatrist at work his opinion, and he did a very thorough assessment. He thinks the flu shot was injected into the rotator cuff, causing rotator cuff tendonitis which then caused bicep tendonitis and possibly early frozen shoulder. The forearm and elbow is referred pain, and the swollen lymph nodes are a result of the inflammation. ( I have no other signs of infection, and had blood work to rule it out).
I'm unable to work.....the more I use my arm the worse it gets. I'm TRYING really hard to rest (I'm normally very active in sports), will start physio next week, and I'm booked for an ultrasound....so we'll see how it goes!
I've found advil 3x a day and application of heat most effective for my pain relief.....but I'm still very much suffering....not just the physical, but emotionally aswell. I have taken comfort in reading posts from others, but I can't wait for this nightmare to end.....for all of us!
I've reported this unfortunate accident the the nurse who gave me the shot, Occupational Health and Safety, Work Safe BC, and I will also be reporting this to the Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration, and Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System.

I am allergic to eggs so never had an flu shots.I have had too many shots, due to Immunology Shots (5 times).Plus a lot of shots & IV's due to some major medical problems. This last ED visit (April),my potassium was extremely high.A nurse gave me an injection to bring it down. The tube/syringe (2"x6" ) was used for the medicine to fix the potassium. It started to hurt within a few seconds after the nurse started it.It got worse as she kept giving the injection.I know there was a lot of fluid I needed,in the shot.Yet she did it very quickly.Less than 2 minutes.I told her my arm hurt really bad.But she just walked off. After they put me in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks, with more IV's & blood draws. The pain never went away. The nurses were doing all they could think of.Hot packs helped a little.Due to kidney problems on top of heart surgery,I can't take anything for pain.I did try Aspirin, but they told me I couldn't take it often. It started in the beginning of April and still hurts no matter what I have tried.Heat packs, massages,I had PT after my hospital stay ( 3 1/2 weeks).I told every doctor, nurse & the PT about the pain.I am now having Visiting Nurses come in.I have told them about it too, along with my PC & the specialists I saw the other day.No one seems to know what to do about it.They do understand how it happened.I even called the ED a couple of weeks after getting home. They couldn't tell me what to do expect call my PC.I am right handed & that's the shoulder that hurts.I can't lift it up or over my head,so hard to try to get shirts on & off. When I try to use it,there is a sharp shooting pain.I can't sleep on my right side,I can't use it to push myself out of bed.The sharp pain goes down to my fingers too.I wish I could find a way to get through this & be back to normal. Can anyone help ??

the pain asssociated with the Flu shot has to be reported back to the office or store that you got the flu shot so it's recoreded. So many people complaining about the flu shot pain and doctors who don't believe them but nobody is talking about going back to where the flu shot was given to report this horrific side effect. You have to go back and complain to the person who gace you the shot so it's recoreded and reported back to the government. Dont deley report it right away!!!

Hello,
I am still having some difficulties too with the arm that was injured at work by my assistant manager/coworker. I will not give names. My arm is not better and I am still under the doctor's care. My arm locks up, throbs, and the pain is accommodated with shoulder pain also. And this happened in 2007. We were given a High Dose Flu shot while on a lunch break at work in the Pharmacy. When I looked down at that dose, it looked giant sized. I did not know at the time that the high dose would be extremely too much vaccine for me. My arm really swelled up before the attack. And I thought the high dose fluvaccine was for older people 65 and over. I am 48 years old. Strange.

Just for the record, I had a pharmacist give me a flu shot, and it still hurts a month later. The weirdest thing... after about two days a 1/2 inch vertical bloody scab appeared at the injection site. The scab fell off the third week and now there is a white scar. Bizarro. I still feel the ache in my weak arm, but I am going to go to the gym today to see if I can start some rehab through gentle stretching and lifting (light) weights. (The gym is my usual routine.) To paraphrase my teenage students: This sucks!

What is happening? I have had trouble since my shot and didn't put it together until my husband mentioned maybe the shot caused the trouble. So I googled problems with flu shot in arms and am shocked to see all the people who are having the same problems as I am!! I even have thought of cancer in my arm because I havent done anything to injure it. Can't sleep on left side hurts to lift my arm over my head and can't lift very much without pain!! I will not get a flu shot again and can only hope this clears up eventually but has already been over 2 months!!

HI. Had flu shot five years ago in left arm. Can't sleep on it, move it certain ways. I thought of cancer too. Had one flu shot in right arm year later that one is fine. Not much seems to work for pain. Went swimming two days ago almost passed out at pool from pain. Feeling kind of depressed because it's been this long.

Hi Anonymous,

I'm sorry you are experiencing this pain. With the Intramuscular injection it seems that the chances of it being given in the wrong site can cause pain. If you read over some of our members posts you'll see how some of them have helped ease the pain.

Hope the pain gets better soon!
