Q:

New ovarian cyst on opposite side :(

I am 23 years old. Early September, I was diagnosed with a 6 cm cyst on my left ovary. My gyn told me to come back for an ultrasound in a month. I had a lot of sharp pain in my left pelvis, but eventually it subsided. It started to kick up again around the time I got my 2nd ultrasound. To my surprise (and hers, apparently), when I went to see my gyn, she told me that I had a 5 cm cyst on my RIGHT ovary, and my left was clear. I even looked at the report.

In disbelief, she called the radiologist to confirm, and they said yes, the cyst is indeed on the right side.

I am still having pain on the left side! Lots of it! In addition, in the past week I've felt extremely bloated with stabbing abdominal pains, almost like ulcer pains, except it goes on throughout the day. I have nausea and an overall "unwell" feeling.

I have no history of cysts before now, but have been skipping periods and having bleeding between periods for the past year or so. I am becoming very concerned about ovarian cancer being a possibility. Also, why would I still be feeling this on the left?

Thank you for any reassurance. :( This site is a big help.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. Both cysts were described to me as simple cysts. It is just hard for me to imagine that the two cysts and abdominal pain could all occur within little over a month and not be related. I am also worried about potential infection.

I scheduled an appointment with my primary care doctor for Friday, as my gym is busy and will not see me for a couple of months. My gyn said she was not worried about cancer because I am young, but I knew a high schooler with ovarian cancer, and had a classmate pass away from liver cancer, so this is not very reassuring.

I just want to feel better. One 6 cm cyst was bad enough.

Hello BigNoseKate,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. Thank you for coming to us with your concern about the development of a cyst on your right ovary and persistent symptoms in your left lower abdomen.

The most common type of ovarian cyst is a functional cyst, which often form during the menstrual cycle. These cysts form when the sac doesn't break open to release the egg. Then the sac keeps growing. This type of cyst most often goes away in 1 to 3 months.

Could this be the type of cyst that developed on your left ovary?

I wonder if your symptoms of bloating, lower abdominal pain, and nausea are related to a gastrointestinal issue. If the symptoms persist or worsen, consider scheduling an appointment with a gastroenterologist.

Regards,
Maryann
