Q:

My period is late after taking Postinor 2

Hello,
I was on my 6th day of my cycle (just finishing my period). The condom split so I took the first tablet of postinor2 2 hours later (1am). We then had unprotected sex 6 hours later (7am). I took the 2nd postinor tablet 3 hours later(10am).
8 days later I had heavy bleeding lasting 4 days. Firstly, is this a sign that postinor worked?
Since then i have had no sign of my period.
In the last 2 weeks (aboit 22nd day of cycle) I have had the flu and been unwell. This has all made me quite anxious.
My period cycle is quite irregular.
Thanks for your help in advance

Hi Anon
Thank you for your post!
Emergency contraceptives are up to 95% effective when taken as prescribed within the first 24 hours and up to 90% effective if taken within 72 hours, so the risk is very small. It works by preventing ovulation and stopping a pregnancy from starting. It is not an abortion pill. It prevents a pregnancy, it does not end one. Side effects can include stomach aches, headaches, dizziness, breast pain, nausea and a general feeling of being unwell. Some women can bleed a little or quite extensively after taking emergency contraception.
The more frequently they are taken, the more likely a woman is to have side effects and an irregular cycle. They should be taken only for emergencies, not used as a method of birth control.
Symptoms usually start 2-7 days after taking the medication and may or may not include bleeding or spotting. Not all women get symptoms. Some get many, or a few, or none. If a woman doesn’t get her next period within a week of it’s expected date, a pregnancy test may be necessary although the risk is very low. Periods can often be delayed or longer/shorter as a result of taking emergency contraception. We cannot predict this for our readers in terms of length of delays. Each woman is different. Periods should get back to normal by the second cycle after.
Best,
Susan

Hello Anon

Unprotected sex without ejaculation is still unsafe sex - accidents can happen quite easily and suddenly.

A blood test for pregnancy, taken on the 25th, after sex on the 15th - with a period after - means you're not pregnant.

You got your last period on Sept 18th. Why are you expecting it a week later? It won't be due for another 2-3 weeks. Your Sept. bleeding on the 18th can be considered a period.

I saw my period on August 5-9 then had an unprotected sex on August 11 and 12 with my boyfriend he did not release inside me, even though he did the withdrawal method I used postinor 2 on the 13th of August out of fear.
Had sex again on the 15th August. After the postinor I started bleeding on the 19th to 23rd of August.
I have never used postinor before.
Had an unprotected sex again on the 28th of August, on the 17th of September I had unprotected sex now I have not seen my period and I'm 10days late.
I have done the strips pregnancy test twice, but was negative. Did a blood test on 25th of September negative also.

On the dates I highlighted with the sex, during that period I was on an antibiotic (beecham ampiclox) at a time I was using it frequently, then I started using it immediately after sex.

I am bloated, my nipples are hurting and my abdomen have been cramping once in a while, I don't feel sick..but i am scared.
I will never use that drug again or have unprotected sex ever. I just started having sex.
Help advie me.. I am scared and confused.

Hello Anon

If your tests are negative as of a couple of days ago, the likelihood of you being pregnant is very low. Most antibiotics don't actually interfere with birth control but check yours out online to see if it could.
It sounds like your period may be on it's way, based on your symptoms, Give yourself another week and if your period hasn't come, take another test. Emergency contraception can have some severe side effects for some women, very few for others.

I know you said you won't have unprotected sex but you really risked pregnancy by having so much unprotected sex. The withdrawal method is simply not safe enough for you. Use condoms 100% of the time. In this day and age, there's no need to get pregnant unless you're ready.

Keep us posted and good luck-
Susan

Hello.

Emergency contraceptives are up to 95% effective when taken as prescribed within the first 24 hours and up to 90% effective when taken within 72 hours. So the risk is very small. It works by preventing ovulation and stopping a pregnancy from starting. Read the information that comes with the pills so you know what to expect.

We cannot say if you are pregnant. You will have to take a pregnancy test to find out. They are accurate 14 - 21 days after sex. Be aware, ECP can cause period irregularity. So a late period is not uncommon. In addition, being ill can also impact your cycle.

Hello.

There is nothing you can do but wait. If you read through the many comments here, a delay in your period is a known side effect of taking ECP. Pregnancy tests are accurate 14-21 days after sex.
