My monthly visitor has stopped coming.

My last menstrual cycle ended last December 18, 2011. Since then, I haven't had my period. I have no idea why. It used to be pretty irregular, usually late by a week or so, but never like this. I don't take pills or inject any hormones or take some kind of special medication, if that's relevant. The closest I ever got to a sexual experience happened about a full year ago, so I'm quite certain I didn't get pregnant from that. In fact, I've actually lost 25 pounds since that "sexual encounter" (no, I don't think it was because of some kind of freaky disease, I just radically changed my diet and finally got around to some semblance of decent physical activity). This would all be fairly reasonable, unless, of course, I was somehow brain-hijacked and actually delivered the baby last December. Actually, even that won't explain my situation right now. A pregnancy from a different encounter, perhaps? (Quite regrettably) I haven't even kissed a guy in a year. But my virtually nonexistent sex life is another story for another day. So, any thoughts?

fitandfab,

A missed period can be caused by a sudden change in weight-- radical changes are shocking to your body and you may not be consuming enough food (based on your last post on always being hungry). Eating fruits all day is not enough to satiate hunger, you need to add proteins and even some carbs to be on a healthy diet and get your period back on track. If you miss your period for more than 3 months, please see your doctor.

I think you have a good point. I think I've even read that anorexics sometimes stop getting their periods because of lack of nutrients. But I am nowhere near that. I do eat less now. But I didn't think that it was so much less that I'd stop menstruating. Surely a 500-calorie deficit would not result in something as alarming as that. Or would it? I guess I don't really know.

A 500 calorie deficit daily can definitely result in a change in your period because your body has not yet adjusted to not having those extra 500 cal. It certainly doesn't make you anorexic, but you may want to consider decreasing the amount of calories in your diet gradually as opposed to cutting the 500 calories at once.

Best,

Rosa

Thank you for your advice. I think it is best to do that. I'm actually planning on gradually raising my calorie intake to the level needed to maintain my current weight since I'm not really that much interested in losing any more weight anyway. I guess I'm just scared that if I start consuming the amount recommended, I'll gain all the weight I lost right back.
