Hello, my 82 yr old Mother was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few days ago. As soon as she found out there was a tumor and all the blood work and scans proved it she said she wanted no treatments at all of any kind. Her weight had dropped to 87lbs but has since come up a few lbs with medication. She sleeps most of the and still feels exhausted. She will eat very little but has been drinking ensure 3 times a day. Her dr referred us to hospice and they are coming tomorrow. I guess my question is, what should I look for, and his long does anyone think she has. Along with the cancer she also has very bad lung disease, she was never a smoker. My mind is just going in circles and I feel so heart broken, I am hoping that someone hear can help guide me.

Hello Maureen925,

Thank you for reaching out to our community. I can appreciate how you must be feeling right now. I lost my mother to cancer when she was 63 years old. It is never easy.

Hospice will be a great help to both you and your mother. Keeping your mother comfortable is the priority. It is important that you have a strong support system.

Each day is precious. Take the opportunity to tell your mother how much you love her. Caressing her hands and spending time talking when she has the strength can help both of you.

We are here to listen whenever you need us.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. I am so sorry to hear that your father suffers with pancreatic cancer. Is the chemotherapy helping?

As you may already know, pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas — an organ in your abdomen that lies horizontally behind the lower part of your stomach. Your pancreas secretes enzymes that aid digestion and hormones that help regulate the metabolism of sugars.

It typically spreads rapidly and is seldom detected in its early stages, which is a major reason why it's a leading cause of cancer death. Signs and symptoms may not appear until pancreatic cancer is quite advanced and complete surgical removal isn't possible.

As the cancer progresses, it can cause jaundice, abdominal pain, bowel obstruction and weight loss.

Anonymous, forgive me but what do you mean by lues motion problem?

Your father's physician is the best person to advise you on his home care.
