You are correct. Your girlfriend is not pregnant if she had her period.
The menstrual cycle is regulated by a fine balance of hormones. In the absence of a pregnancy, the hormones trigger the shedding of the lining of the uterus. This is what you see in the menstrual flow or blood of a period. When a woman becomes pregnant, the hormones trigger the lining to stay intact, so the fertilized egg can implant and develop.
