I'm 44 years old. I have missed 2 menstrual cycles. My doctor says it is the beginning of menopause.I have been having hot flashes. I have a 7 year old son and would love to have another child. Is it possible to have a child now?

Hello Anonymous,
Welcome to EmpowHER. I want to share with you some interesting facts about conception during perimenopause. But, I suggest you discuss your desire to have another child with your gynecologist, who will then become your obstetrician.
Perimenopause is the time period during which a woman's body makes its natural transition toward permanent infertility or menopause. Estrogen levels rise and falls unevenly during perimenopause. Your menstrual cycles may lengthen or shorten, and you may begin having menstrual cycles in which your ovaries don't release an egg . You may also experience menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes, sleep problems and vaginal dryness.
By age 40, a woman has a five percent chance of conceiving in any given month.
Women are born with all the eggs they will ever produce. By the time four decades have passed, those eggs have aged, increasing the chance of chromosomal abnormalities. In addition, older women are at increased risk for a host of medical issues and complications throughout pregnancy, including high blood pressure and gestational diabetes.
Unless you have gone a year without a period, which is the technical definition of menopause, pregnancy remains a possibility. Some women may experience menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes or skipped periods for a few months, only to have them disappear and their cycle return.
Anonymous, I hope this information is helpful.
