For the benefit of our readers, uric acid is produced when the body breaks down a chemical called purine. Purine occurs naturally in the body, but it's also found in certain foods. A buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints can cause certain health issues such as kidney stones and gout, which is a type of arthritis.
