I am 24 years married female. I am diagnosed having thoraco lumbar scoliosis with 45degrees of curvature. I have been suggested for a surgery. But I wish to have a baby before surgery. At present I have low back pain during my periods and when I am overloaded with some house hold work. So if I become pregnant will it cause problems during pregnancy period? Also, during delivery will it cause any other problem? Please let me know.

Thank you..

Hi, Anu,

Welcome to EmpowHER, and thank you so much for writing.

Can you tell me exactly what kind of surgery your doctor is recommending? Have you worn a brace?

With a scoliosis curvature of 45 degrees, does your doctor feel that it will progress without surgery?

And what does your doctor tell you about pregnancy before or after your surgery?

As I understand thoracolumbar scoliosis, your curvature is in the middle of your spine, correct? Are you certain that your lower back pain is due to your scoliosis?

Do you have any other health issues?

We have a similar thread with a lot of information on pregnancy and scoliosis here:

Hi Diane,

Thank you for the response. Here are my answers:

When I was 16 years old I was wearing a brace and at that time the doctor (orthopaedist) asked me to wear the brace until the growing period stops. So i just wore for a few years and stopped wearing. After that I did not face any problem.

But recently a year ago (soon after marriage), I started to suffer from low back pain especially during my periods. So when I visited the spine specialist I took a MRI and x-ray of the spine. MRI was normal. But x-ray showed that the curvature has slightly increased by a few degrees. So the doctor advised me to go for a correction. He was talking about supporting the spine with a rod. I dont know much about it. Doctor did not specify much about becoming pregnant at this time. He also said that surgery can be postponed to a few years.. Also the doctor said that there are chances of the curvature getting increased by 1-2 degrees a year. Apart from that I donot suffer from any other problem..
