I agree with the above responses, and wanted to let you know something interesting (and surprising!?) I found out when we were trying to conceive. Each cycle, a woman has about a 20% chance of getting pregnant. That's it! I had always thought, "I'm having unprotected sex, and off birth control...so I'll automatically be pregnant".

I was surprised that it doesn't necessarily happen that easily, and after learning that the chances of becoming pregnant are (only) 20% each cycle, it makes more sense.

Best wishes.

Hi, Anon,

Thanks so much for your question. It sounds like there's a lot going on here for you.

First of all, I'm glad you're having another doctor take a look at your ovarian cysts. Are they causing you pain? Are they just cysts or have you been dealing with endometriosis? Have you had any treatment for them in the past?

I agree with Virginia, the most important thing to do is to take care of your own health concerns. Figuring out whether your ovarian cysts need to be taken care of should be your first priority.

In terms of trying to get pregnant, it's just not easy for everyone! That doesn't mean it won't happen for you. You're very young and you have plenty of time to be a mom.

I have a few questions for you:

Are you familiar with your body's cycles?

Are your periods regular?

Do you keep track of them on a chart, or have you used a basal thermometer to preduct ovulation? (You can also use ovulation predictor kits that you can buy at the store, but they get a little expensive month after month). Learning to predict your own ovulation -- both with the calendar and with the changes in how your body is feeling -- can help very much in trying to get pregnant.

May I ask why you are putting pressure on yourself to get pregnant so quickly? Because stress in itself can be one factor in conceiving a child.

And don't forget that there are two parties here. If there does turn out to be some sort of fertility issue that needs solving here, it might be about you or it might be about your boyfriend. Men can have sperm count issues and motility (movement) issues, just like we can have issues with our ovaries, our Fallopian tubes or our uterus.

Take care, and write back with more information. Let's see if we can help you figure things out.

Dear Anon, I appreciate your posting and hope to help with your question. First of all, you need to see a GYN doctor who can run some tests, do an ultrasound and provide you with a diagnosis as appropriate. If cysts run in your family, there is always a good chance you may also have them but is that a cause of infertility? I am not sure, so getting a consultation with your doctor is your best bet. You are only 21 and taking care of your body first is more critical than attempting to bring life into this world. Your body will go through many changes during pregnancy, so addressing any health concerns prior to that will be a smart thing to do.
