Q:

I have been taking Pristiq 50 mg for about 6 months for depression. My hot flashes and night sweats have been increasing at a terrible rate. I just read that Pristiq is susposed to help with hot flashes. What gives? Please help me.

I have just been prescribed Pristiq to help with my hyperhidrosis. I sweat randomly when something unexpected happens or i feel nervous. It dosent have to be alot just a little twinge of nervousness and once I feel that first bead of sweat on my face my nervousness increases and its a viscous cycle. I see one of the side effects Pristiq is actually hyperhidrosis....should I be seeking a second opinion?

I have been on Pristiq for several months now for depression. Although I feel much better, I now get about 40 hot flashes a day, severe ones, and I am woken up every night at least four times with night sweats. I feel like I am losing my mind. I thought maybe I was in premenopause, but I still get a regular period. (I am 48 years old.) These hot flashes and night sweats are so bad I want to sit and cry. They are ruining my life. Even if I am beginning to go into premenopause, these syptoms have come on so suddenly and are so extreme that I finally began to research it and have found that the Pristiq could be the reason for this. Has anyone else experienced this? They are so bad and have effected my life so severly that I'd almost rather be depressed. I am at the end of my rope.

Anon,

Hang onto that rope. We don't want you to fall off.

Among the listed side effects of Pristiq on drugs.com is "hot flushes." It is down at the bottom of the list, but it's there. Here is the chart (scroll down until you see it):

http://www.drugs.com/sfx/pristiq-side-effects.html

Depending on your dose, either 1 or 2 percent of people taking Pristiq report this reaction. That may not seem like very many people until you think about it this way: If one doctor has 100 patients on this medicine, 1 or 2 of them will have this side effect. If there are 100 doctors in a city with 100 patients each on this medicine, that's 100-200 people experiencing it right there. And we know that there are thousands and thousands of people who take this medicine.

Please call your doctor today. Make an appointment and tell her or him that you cannot bear this side effect any longer. Ask to be switched to another anti-depressant. Your doctor will probably want to wean you off the Pristiq and wean you onto the new medicine, so it may take you a few weeks to get totally switched over, but it sounds like it would be worth it. And there are many, many anti-depressants out there; the key is finding the one that helps you WITHOUT the side effects. OK?

Will you call your doctor today, and will you come back and let us know what happens?

My sister & I both started Pristiq for abut 2 months and have had the wierdest side effect. We both have had these chic pea shaped balls in out stool. When opened they contain a white powdery substance. The doctor said it is undigested food. I'm not happy with this answer, since we both have it, and this is the only common denominator. We don't live in the same house, so have not eaten the same foods. Has this happened to anyone else? We are both very scared about this.

I have had the exact same thing for over a year. The doctor keeps telling me it is just the shell, but it isn't, because it contains a white powdery substance. I want to know what it is, as I think that I am religiously taking this medication daily thinking it is going to help with my depression, yet it is a waste of time as it is just passing right through my system. We are not crazy! We just need to find out what is going on...

My doctor and pharmacist told me yesterday that it is NOT normal for Pristiq to exit the body in pill form. I have undiagnosed GI issues, and this is just another problem I need to bring to the attention of my GI doc next time I see him.

This just happened to me today for the first time, that I've noticed, at least. I am relieved to find out that it is most likely the Pristiq since that seems to be the one common denominator. What I saw did not look like the pill, but rather like, as mentioned above, a chick pea (slightly larger and darker; carrot-colored - not to be gross but there is another site that has a pic and it is exactly what I saw too). I did not touch or open it, so I don't know if the powder was inside. I feel better after being on this drug for a few weeks now (50mg) and it does say you can see the pill case in your stool, so I am going to try to just go with that and presume it releases the drug as it works its way through my system, and perhaps there is some leftover when it is expelled and that is OK. However, they should mention though that it looks different coming out than when it goes in because it really gave me a scare. If anyone else finds out more information, please post it here. Thanks...
