So I’ve recently learned that HSV 2 goes through shedding which I didn’t know prior to this. I’m one of the few lucky people who do not experience that many sores frequently but I do have HSV2. The shedding concept confused and scared me. I know you can still spread the virus while not having any visible symptoms like sores. My concern is for my partner. He’s uninfected but I am. I just recently told him since we wanted to become sexually active. When the HSV2 virus shed is it still only contagious through genitial secretions or how can I spread it when I’m shedding? So I know how to go about this safely. I understand a condom doesn’t cover everything but does the risk of spreading it even with a condom come from the fact that if there was a cut somewhere near his genitals my genital secretion could touch the area an potentially infect him? I want to have my facts straight so I can explain to my partner exactly what we need to do.

Since it has been some months and you are still unclear, talk to your gynecologist for advice and bring your partner with you so he can benefit from the advice too.
