Q:

How strong is a bladder lift using silicone mesh 3 weeks after surgery?

I just had my second bladder lift surgery in 4 years and at my 3-week appointment the doctor said everything looked great. The next day I was constipated and did far too much pushing (according to after-surgery Dos and Don'ts) plus my husband just got a new motorcycle and I've been on that 3 times since my first post-surgery checkup. The first two times resulted in no pain or discomfort whatsoever, but last night's ride caused me to have severe urination pain when I got home and just an all around feeling that something isn't right. I never asked my doctor how tight they actually "tie" the silicone mesh and the post-surgery Dos and Don'ts doesn't say much of anything about after the 3 week recovery period. I made an appointment for Monday, but am going crazy wondering if I've blown the whole thing and will have to pay for another whole surgery, since I was stupid enough to not lay back in a recliner and take short walks for the entire 4-6 week recovery period. Can anyone ease my worry over this 4th of July weekend? How easy is it for the mesh to break free and my bladder to fall again? Would one bout of constipation and 3 motorcycle rides (hitting a half dozen or so hard bumps) be enough to pull my bladder away again? Thanks. Debbie, Topeka, KS

I'm wondering the same thing. I had to pull open a heavy door today and I'm so nervous I've pulled something loose. I was having some strange sensations before I did this and now everything I feel makes me nervous. Along with the bladder mesh I also had anterior and posterior repair and cystocele repair. Would I know if I have done damage? I'm 55 and scared!

I had a bladder ift last October. I also have a problem with rectal incontinence which has caused a severe urinary tract infection. My gastro doctor just did a motility test and an ultra sound colonoscopy where they filled me with air. I can't get rid of the UTI. I'm wondering if these 2 other tests did something to dislodge the mesh. I am on my third batch of antiobiotics and am now having problems with emptying my bladder.

Just had my lift 3 1/2 weeks ago and feel great, I have to keep reminding myself not to push it. Don't want to blow this work. Haven't felt this good in ages with the bladder falling before. It really paid to take it easy and not rush it. I had a hysterectomy at 28 and didn't stay down when I should so I paid for it later. Take it slow ladies, I'm 54 now and you don't want to be inactive at that age, you only get fat and are in pain all the time with the pressure of the bladder on the legs. Be good to yourself

Debbie,
Great news! I'm so glad you updated us on how you are doing, and it will also help other women who are going through a difficult healing and recovery to know that it may be OK...to just check with their doctor to make sure.

Congrats!

Thanks, Alison, I was very glad to hear the good news too. I'm not quite sure how this website works yet, but I think I'm getting the hang of it now. Glad to know there's a place to go when you don't know where to go. Debbie

Good news! My doctor said everything looks and feels great - almost completely healed already, so she canceled my appointment on the 29th! She also said everything I experienced was probably just part of the healing process (everyone heals differently) and it would have taken more than a couple hard bumps on a motorcycle to have the silicone mesh let loose. Thanks for your reply. Debbie

Debbie,

I'm so sorry that noone got to your question over the Fourth of July weekend. We have slower traffic on holiday weekends and clearly it slipped through the cracks.

Today is your appointment, and I'm so glad for you. It sounds like you've had a rough time these last few days. What did you find out?
