Is there a recommended amount of daily outdoor activity/exercise that children should have every day? With winter just a couple of months off, I try to have my kids outdoors a lot to make up for many days indoors.
My kids play outdoors in winter too, but when it gets too cold (think -15 degrees!) it's safer to stay inside.
Is an hour enough? Two?

Activity in general is good for your health. Check out this website from the Attorney General's Office that indicates practical amounts of time people (including children) should spend on physical activities. http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/sgr/ataglan.htm.
This is general information on activity levels needed for a healthy lifestyle. As for the brisk outdoors in the months to come, I think it is important for everyone to spend some time outside. The indoors with the heat blowing consistently can cause a lot of dust which could be bad for allergies, sniffles and sneezing. So in general, outdoor activity that doesn't prolong over a 30 minute period could be beneficial. Have your children build a snowman or go sled riding down a hill.
All in all, even in the snow months, we can still maintain our levels of Vitamin D from the sun. Make sure to bundle up though. Brrrr!
