Q:

How long does it take for a grade II sprain to heal?

I rolled my ankle on 1/10/12 and I am still miserable! I have been in a fracture boot since 1/25, had negative x-rays and a bone scan. The MRI showed a very thin ATF ligament with severe swelling 2 months later. I had an EMG/NCV that was inconclusive, but did show an issue with the superficial peroneal nerve. I have asked for a podiatry consult, but my provider wants me to see a physiatrist for pain management. I have had no PT at all yet. Is it unreasonable for me to want a second opinion from a specialist?

Hi Azevlab227,

A sprain heals independently in every person-- all things like tendon and ligament tears, fractures, nerve damage must be taken into consideration. Have you followed all instructions by your doctor while wearing the boot?

Physical therapy is important, especially if this has been going on since January. I don't think it is unreasonable for you to get a second opinion but I am questioning why your doctor would suggest a psychiatrist for pain management?

I hope you get some relief soon!

Best,

Rosa
