How do you quickly clear a clogged ear from too much nose blowing?

clearing clogged ear

Hello everyone!

A dear friend of mine called me tonight to ask me for some advice on how to fix her clogged-up ear. It seems she is getting over a bad cold and was doing some heavy-duty nose blowing and her left ear feels all funny now. Sort of like when you're on a plane and your ears pop. Hers needs to pop but won't. I thought maybe a decongestant would help her, or opening her mouth as wide as she can--that helps me sometimes when my ears won't pop on a plane. She tried opening her mouth and even moving her jaw back and forth but it didn't do anything.

She said it's hard to hear now in her left ear and it feels very full and has a bit of pressure, so she's hoping to get it back to normal pretty fast. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for her? I also tried to gently remind her not to blow her nose with such force so hopefully this won't happen again. Thanks so much everyone, Michelle

I had an ear infection and wax build-up in both ears. I went to the E.N.T (ear, nose, throat doctor). He took out all of the earwax that was blocking the ears. The doctor told me that it is an infection behind the eardrum and that ear drops won't help so he prescribed amoxicillin which I took for 10 days. I finished the amoxicillin and the plugged feeling still hasn't gone away. My hearing is okay but pretty muffled. I really need some help because I feel like this has been going on for too long. Longer than my usual allergy caused ear plugs. Please help and thank you! (:

I, too, blew my nose too hard and got my right ear plugged. There is too much pressure in there and I'm not sure how to relieve it. It's been hours. I agree, swimmer's ear is easy, plug and blow slightly, easy, no problem. But, this is an "ear-pop" from blowing my nose, so there is too much pressure. Holding my nose and blowing will create MORE pressure, that has to be wrong for this situation. I need to open the internal passage to let the pressure back into my sinus.

I am interested in this pressing-earlobe trick, but it's very unclear how to do this, exactly. Could someone please post the steps clearly. I don't understand where this bulb of cartilage is that I'm supposed to feel, which way I'm supposed to be turning/leaning/bending/pressing. Please post, step-by-step. All I have with this so far is a sore ear/jaw from pressing and twisting my body every which-way.

Yeah I have the EXACT same problem, I had a cold and blew to hard and I couldn't sleep because it hurt so much. What did you end up doing to fix your issue?

Wow- my 6 year old just started with a sore ear feeling like it was under pressure. Tried all our usual tricks to no avail. Read this thread and tried the thumb press onto the ear lobe into the jaw. Worked a treat. Pain gone! Many thanks :)

dont keep posting if it is in reguards to somebodys "bad" advise. its misleading to the people that actually need help, the finger by the ear lobe trick actually works temporarily but before mixin up ur own solution i suggest askin a pro first before u melt out an eardum lol

Hope it's ok to add to this older post but I am trying to find help with a similiar problem.
I woke up yesterday with a clogged almost deaf right ear. It is very uncomfortable, feels full and makes me feel weird and other worldly.
I took decongestants last night to no avail.
I also tried swimmer's drops which did nothing. Not knowing what the problem is I also tried using a nasal neti pot thing incase it is allergies - also to no avail.
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow but wonder if this is minor enough that it will do away on it's own soon?
I use ear plugs so I wonder if they might have caused the problem and I may have an infection but there is not very much pain, just a dull, full, deafness.
Thanks for any replies to this.
